  2. lanthanide series, symbol Nd, atomic number
  3. 60, atomic weight 144.24. Its rose-coloured
  4. salts are used in colouring glass, and
  5. neodymium is used in lasers. It was named in
  6. 1885 by Austrian chemist C A von Welsbach
  7. (1858-1929), who fractionated it away from
  8. didymium (originally thought to be an element
  9. but actually a mixture of rare-earth metals
  10. consisting largely of neodymium,
  11. praesodymium, and cerium).
